India’s AP government outlaws online gambling

According to the AP Information Minister Perni Venkataramaiah, "the organisers of online games like rummy and poker will be punished with one year imprisonment if they are caught for the first time."

People who gamble online are subject to a six-month jail sentence, in addition to any penalties that may be imposed for their participation in the illegal activity. A second conviction carries a sentence of two years in prison.

During a media conference, Venkataramaiah stated that internet gambling has developed into a vice that affects the young of the country, and that the State Gaming Act of 1974 would have the required adjustments made to it.

The decision to prohibit online gambling was made when it was reported that the Indian online gaming business had a rise of 21% during the COVID-19 shutdown.
